Early Life and Education

Born into the Tamang community on 5 February, 1968 in the far western Sikkimese town of Soreng, Prem Singh Tamang Biography had a modest upbringing. Unhappy with the direction of the party and convinced that Sikkim required new political altenatives, Tamang along with dissidents split from SPCC and formed the new party called the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha on 4 February 2013. The SKM party presented itself as a popular struggle against corruption and for development.

SKM became the main opposition party with 10 seats in the state assembly elections of 2014, and challenged Chamling’s Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF). Tamang himself was declared elected from the Soreng-Chakung constituency. But his political career came to an abrupt halt when he was convicted in a corruption case and disqualified from the assembly two years ago, serving more than year behind bars.

Released from jail, Tamang saw SKM to a spectacular electoral victory in the 2019 assembly elections, capturing 17 out of 32 seats and taking office.
