Mamata Banerjee Biography: The Iron Lady of West Bengal and TMC Founder

Mamata Banerjee, or “Didi” as she is usually referred to, is the current Chief Minister of West Bengal and the founder of AITMC as well and has been serving as the state’s first woman leader for two consecutive terms now since its estabilshment in 2011. Born on Jan 5, 1955 in Kolkata into a Bengali Hindu family, she emerged from student politics to national prominence with tireless activism against corruption and land acquisition. Her story is one of resilience, a mash-up of mass appeal and strategic welfare schemes that reinvented the politics of Bengal.

Early Life and Education

After her father’s premature death, for Mamata Banerjee, who was raised in South Kolkata’s Harinavi locality by a humble lower-middle-class family, the will to fight had long been forged. She finished her schooling at Deshapran Girls’ High School and then went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in Islamic History from Jogamaya Devi College and then finally a master’s in the same field from Calcutta University. Starting out in politics as a student activist of the Congress party in the 1970s, she became known for publicly protesting Jayaprakash Narayan by dancing on top of his car in an act that was widely covered by the media.

Career Her political career began with serving as General Secretary of Mahila Congress (1976-1980) and she was elected to Lok Sabha in 1984 at the age of 29 years from Jadavpur constituency, defeating the veteran Communist politician Somnath Chatterjee during the sympathy wave that followed Indira Gandhi’s assassination.

Political Rise and TMC Formation

Bitter with the corruption in Congress, Banerjee established the Trinamool Congress on January 1, 1998 to fight and oust West Bengal’s 34-year-old Left Front government. Among her key milestones were a 2006 hunger strike against Singur land acquisition for Tata Motors and the Nandigram protests, that brought anti-Left forces together to capture power in the state assembly polls of 2011.

She twice served as Union Railway Minister (1999–2001, 2009–2011); she introduced Duronto express trains and women-only train-coaches; and laid the foundation stones for 19 new lines with emphasis on connections in Bengal. Mamata, of course, will be haunted by 2010 when TMC swept Kolkata Municipal polls and she was on a high march to chief ministership.

Other recent proposals are the 2025 “Amader Para, Amader Samadhan” scheme at ₹8,000 crore for solving individual issues at grass-root level and Shramashree for migrant workers providing a monthly assistance of ₹5,000.

Controversies and Challenges

Banerjee faced criticism for the 2013 Saradha scam in West Bengal, involving alleged siphoning and loss of funds from several millions of small investors across the state, a multibillion-rupee chit fund by TMC leaders, covering-up the RG Kar medical college rape-murder case (2024) and reported police inaction. What if he calls for rehabilitating Idate jameen? From the imam stipends (held unconstitutional later) and stalling NRC,came accusations of ’looking like Muslim appeasement’.

Remarks: Opposition flags 2018 panchayat polls violence, BJP poaching allegation hits back with 2021 ‘comeback’ as strategist Prashant Kishor. Nonetheless, her secular stand and anti-BJP battle keeps TMC alive.]

Personal Life and Legacy

#link Never married, Banerjee leads an austere life with her brother and nephew Abhishek (TMC MP), focused on public service than family; speculations of marriage are still unsubstantiated & negated. A closet poet (known for books like “Upto Panchashatbar’’ will ensure that Mamata’s fiery oratory is a perfect complement to her Didi’s image as the all-caring bonani.
