Rangaswamy served as Leader of Opposition in 2000. He was made the Chief Minister in 2001 after the Congress government fell. Rangaswamy first served for a full term from 2001 to 2006, when he focused on free rice schemes, housing and education aid.
He became CM again in 2008 after winning the 2006 election (as leader of the opposition, since forming govt). His second term (2008–2011) was marked by large welfare schemes, such as free bicycles for schoolgirls (“Bicycle Baba’s brainwave”), subsidized LPG and old-age pensions.

The AINRC won five seats in the 2011 election and later formed a coalition with AIADMK. In 2016, the AINRC had bagged just three seats. The return to form happened in 2021 when AINRC won 6 seats and formed government with the help of BJP. Rangaswamy was the third time CM (2021–2022).
He is now a powerful voice of opposition since falling from power in 2022 on the grounds that his alliance was too lax, and he won Yanam in the by-election last year. His daughter Nandini Rangaswamy has become more involved in party business and is being touted as his political heir.
