For numerous kids, mornings consist of drowsy yawns, hurried meals, and the scramble to board the school van. On this fateful Tuesday, students from Krishnaswamy Vidyaniketan in Kumarapuram got into their school van, oblivious to the unimaginable tragedy that awaited them.
Around 7:45 AM, the school van neared Gate No. 170 — a staffed level crossing in Semmankuppam village. Shortly after, the Villupuram–Mayiladuthurai passenger train roared along the tracks, colliding with the van so powerfully that it was launched several meters away. The consequences were haunting — contorted metal, broken glass, pleas for assistance, and the unfathomable stillness of lives extinguished far too early. Since then, the juvenile victims have been identified as:
- Charumathi, (16 years)
- Sezhiyan, (15 years)
- Nimalesh, (12 years)
In a split second, their aspirations of maturing, of lunch breaks filled with laughter, of learning and success, were dashed. The pain is incomprehensible to their relatives. Parents didn’t expect to receive a call that would permanently change their life as they sent their kids off to school, expecting them to return by the afternoon.
Along with the deceased, the van driver, three additional students, and a bystander were hurt and are being treated at Cuddalore Government General Hospital. As the agony of loss is felt, inquiries arise regarding how this disaster occurred at a staffed railway crossing — a setup designed to avert such misfortunes. Initial accounts offer contradictory stories:
- Several witnesses assert that the gatekeeper was missing or dozing, resulting in the barrier being left open and no alerts provided.
- Some claim that the gatekeeper was there and tried to close the gate, but the van driver sped through — ultimately getting stuck on the tracks as the train came near.
Regardless of negligence, miscommunication, or a tragic error in judgment, the outcome is unchanged: young lives diminished in a system that did not safeguard them.
The Southern Railway has initiated an internal investigation, and the gatekeeper has been placed on suspension while the inquiry is ongoing. A dedicated committee made up of representatives from the Railway Safety, Operations, and Engineering departments is currently scrutinizing all aspects of the incident — from the state of the gate to the order of events that occurred. It has left the town of Cuddalore in shock. Schools observed quiet periods. Vigils by candlelight are being planned. With the melancholy of a community grieving for its young, the streets are quieter. Their peers and friends are shocked to learn that their benchmates are now only memories.
A developing sense of injustice lies at the core of this anguish. “What caused this to occur? One mom fought back tears as she questioned, “How can we send our children to school and not know if they’ll return?” The disaster occurred not only on the tracks but all around them, as evidenced by the fact that even a local homeowner who was trying to assist during the rescue was hurt and reportedly received an electric shock in the confusion. The district administration has committed to providing psychological support for the impacted students and families, recognizing that the trauma extends well beyond physical injuries. This isn’t merely a coincidence. This serves as a sobering reminder of the precarious infrastructure we rely on on a daily basis to support our children. There are still thousands of level crossings in India, many of which are manned and some of which are unmanned. However, very few of them have automated gates or intelligent warning systems installed.
Why do we still rely on the watchfulness of a single gatekeeper to avert catastrophes in an era of sophisticated monitoring and intelligent train networks? Safety must be a top priority, particularly when kids are involved. Not only for Cuddalore, but for any area where school vans and railroad tracks coexist, this tragedy must mark a sea change.
